WHY DO SOME SKIN PATCHES TURN WHITE?
WHAT IS VITILIGO?
Vilitigo is something that makes part of your skin turn lighter or white. It happens because the tiny cells that give your skin its color stop working. It's not something you can catch from someone else. and it doesn't hurt. People with vilitigo are just as healthy and awesome as anyone else—they just have unique skin.
AUTOIMMUNE-RELATED
Sometimes, the body's defense system (called the immune system) gets a little confused. Instead of protecting the body, it accidentally turns off the cells that give skin its color. When those color-making cells stop working, some parts of the skin turn white. It's not something the person can control—it just happens, and it's nobody's fault
NON-CONTAGIOUS?
Vitiligo is not something you can catch from someone else. You can hug, play, and share things with a person who has vitiligo, and nothing will happen to you. It's not like a cold or flue—it doesn't spread at all. It just means their skin looks a little different, and that's totally okay!
AFTER ALL SKIN TYPES
Vitiligo can happen to anyone—kids or adults, no matter what their skin color is or where they come from. Sometimes it’s easier to see on darker skin because the white patches stand out more, but people of all skin colors can have vitiligo. It just means their skin looks a little different, and that’s okay!
